Can you have Style & Class without FASHION?
By: Charles French (PJI)

I have read articles and social media post on how people prefer style and class over fashion. But I believe that it is a collaboration of all three that defines an individual who thinks him/herself classy or stylish. Let’s look at a few definitions of the words. Fashion refers to a distinctive and often habitual trend in the style with which a person dresses, as well as to prevailing styles in behaviour. By definition Fashion is: The prevailing style or custom, as in dress or behavior. Class is:  Informal Elegance of style, taste, and manner. And style is: The way in which something is said, done, expressed, or performed.

We watch countless hours of television shows such as the Oscars, Grammy’s, Golden Globes and Music Awards to see our favorite celebrities in expensive garb from notable FASHION designers. It takes long hours and an imagination beyond the norm to create the next trend in fashion. I am sure they think of Style and Class when they create these wonderful wardrobes. In my opinion, I presume they have many considerations to factor the piece they design. One of the most important is the ….Individual. For it is the fashion of the individual that we associate their style or class.

When I think of Style, Class and Fashion, I think of our First Family, President and First Lady Michelle Obama. We have seen them on numerous occasions in some of the most fashionable attire. Mr. Martin Greenfield is the tailor of our President. Mr. Greenfield has tailored suits for Paul Newman, Michael Jackson, Colin Powell, and three Presidents. Gerald Ford, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. The First Lady dawns styles from Jason Wu and Thom Brown. The First Family is noted as the most fashionable Presidential family since the Kennedy’s. Their style and class brings many fashion designers to the epitome of the fashion arena. So in essence, It is my humble opinion that you cannot have style and class without fashion being involved.
