George Benson, the legend and an icon in the music world, gave jazz the boast it needed, by producing the first platinum jazz album in 1976. The ten-time GRAMMY winner was born March 22, 1943 in Pittsburgh, PA. At the age of seven, he first played the ukulele in a corner drug store, for which he was paid a few dollars. At the age of eight, he played guitar in an unlicensed night club on Friday and Saturday nights and at the age of 10, he recorded his first single, "She Makes Me Mad", with RCA-Victor in New York, under the name "Little Georgie".
George Benson started his Jazz career at the age of twenty-one, as a Jazz guitarist. He has recorded 36 studio albums, 5 live albums, 7 compilation albums and 50 singles & EPís and at the age of seventy-two he doesnít look like heís slowing down. The album that set it off George Bensonís career was his 1976 LP Breeziní, which was the first Jazz album to be certified platinum. This album has the single Masquerade on it. Benson describes his music as focusing more on love and romance, rather than sexuality. The National Endowment of the Arts recognized Mr. Benson as a Jazz Master in 2009; this is the nation's highest honor in Jazz. Benson has been married to Johnnie Lee since 1965. Piedmont Jazz Initiative is honored to spot light George Benson.
